about digHuman

Digital Humanities Across Disciplines and Borders

digHuman is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme in Digital Humanities developed by the University of Salerno, the University of Porto and Universitat Politècnica de València. The programme creates an international learning environment in which students and teaching staff from different disciplinary backgrounds explore the relationship between Humanities, culture and digital technologies. Its central idea is simple: meaningful Digital Humanities projects require different kinds of knowledge. Humanistic interpretation, technological expertise, information management, communication and creative thinking are therefore brought together throughout the programme.
The digHuman Partnership

Different Expertise. Shared Learning.

digHuman is jointly developed by three European universities whose complementary academic profiles make interdisciplinarity part of the programme itself.

Università degli Studi di Salerno

Italy

The University of Salerno contributes expertise in Computer Science. Connecting technological approaches with the cultural and humanistic questions.

Universidade do Porto

Portugal

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto contributes expertise in Humanities, Information Science, Communication and Cultural Studies.

Universitat Politècnica de València

Spain

The School of Informatics of UPV contributes expertise in computing, project development, innovation and digital technologies.

The partnership brings together disciplines that do not always share the same classrooms.

This is precisely what makes digHuman possible.

Students and lecturers contribute different methods, vocabularies and ways of understanding problems, creating a learning environment that reflects the collaborative nature of contemporary Digital Humanities practice.

What Are Digital Humanities?

Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary field situated at the intersection of Humanities and digital technologies.

It includes the use of computational and digital methods to study, preserve, interpret and communicate cultural materials, but also encourages critical reflection on the influence of technology on knowledge, culture and society.

Rather than defining Digital Humanities as a single discipline, digHuman approaches it as a meeting point between different areas of knowledge and practice.

Digital Humanities may involve areas such as:

  • digitisation and digital archives;
  • text analysis and computational linguistics;
  • digital cultural heritage;
  • geographical information systems;
  • data visualisation;
  • digital publishing;
  • multimedia storytelling;
  • generative artificial intelligence;
  • information and communication design.

What Is a Blended Intensive Programme?

A Blended Intensive Programme, or BIP, is an Erasmus+ learning format combining collaborative online learning with short-term physical mobility.

BIPs bring together higher education institutions from different countries to develop innovative international learning experiences.

In digHuman, this means that students first meet and learn online before travelling to the university hosting that year’s intensive week.

The blended format allows the international collaboration to develop over time: teams acquire knowledge, exchange ideas and begin their projects online, before working intensively together in person.

Learning by Working on Something Real

digHuman is built around project-based, challenge-based and experiential learning.

Students do not simply learn about Digital Humanities. They use Digital Humanities approaches to respond to an authentic challenge.

Each edition works with an external cultural organisation connected to the host university. Students analyse its context, needs and audiences and then develop project proposals with potential real-world application.

The learning process therefore moves continuously between theory and practice, encouraging students to make informed choices and reflect critically on the technologies and methods they use.

Through the programme, participants strengthen their ability to:

  • work effectively in international and interdisciplinary teams;
  • connect technological and humanistic perspectives;
  • analyse cultural and information-related challenges;
  • design and organise collaborative projects;
  • communicate ideas to different audiences;
    develop prototypes and multimodal digital content;
  • use emerging technologies critically and responsibly;
  • reflect on the ethical and social implications of digital methods;
    transform ideas into feasible project proposals.
